What is 'Boudoir Photography' in 2026?
When I first began back in 2009 'Boudoir" was marketed mainly to women giving the images to their future spouse. While individuality existed, the gift and photoshoot's main focus was to be for someone else. The standard uniform differed slightly in the color of lace vs the patterns of lace. Occasionally the 'bride' wore a veil in her session!
Now everyone. I mean EVERYONE is the focus of boudoir photography.

The Evolution of Boudoir: Then vs. Now
The Motivation: In the early 2010s, the primary catalyst was an upcoming wedding or anniversary gift for a partner. Today, the number one reason clients book a session is to celebrate a personal milestone, heal their relationship with their body, or document a specific era of their life. Of course boudoir is still seen as a GIFT. But now this gift has more than one purpose and recipient.
The Aesthetic: The "standard uniform" of identical white/black lace and bridal veils has broken wide open. Current sessions feature everything from high-fashion editorial looks and cozy oversized sweaters to leather, vintage corsets, or complete nudity. We've even ventured to beaches, city streets, and these rivers and lakes that you're used to ;)
The Clientele: Boudoir photoshoots are no longer exclusive to young brides-to-be. The industry now enthusiastically serves all ages, body types, genders, and physical abilities. "Milestone boudoir" (celebrating bodies in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond) and "dude-oir" (male boudoir) have also surged in popularity. IDK how I feel about the term dude-oir, but that's what the men traditionally ask for and so that's what I'll call it for now! Stay tuned for a term update eventually!
The Photography Style: Traditional boudoir heavily relied on soft-focus, heavy airbrushing, and highly stylized, unnatural posing. Modern boudoir favors authentic movement, diverse lighting (like dramatic film noir shadows or bright lifestyle sunbeams), and minimal, skin-positive editing.
Why This Shift Happened
The Self-Care Movement: Culturally, we transitioned from viewing self-care as a luxury to recognizing it as a necessity for mental well-being.
The Body Positivity/Neutrality Wave: Social movements pushed back against narrow media standards, encouraging people to document and love their bodies exactly as they are right now.
The Power Dynamic: Clients realized that the true magic of a session happens during the shoot: being listened to, being seen for who they are, the rush of confidence and the shift in self-perception, seeing that a winged eyeliner CAN look good. The after product, like a printed album, showcases the permanent results of what has already been seen!

Even when modern brides do create a gift album for their partners, the underlying energy is entirely different. It is no longer, "Look at this object I bought for you." It is now, "Look at how incredible, confident, and powerful I look."
I am LOVING this shift in the ideaology of boudoir and it's purpose in our lives.
Now everyone. I mean EVERYONE is the focus of boudoir photography.

...or genuinely nothing at all except a Tuesday and a desire to feel like a whole person again.
You do not need a "reason." Wanting to see yourself as beautiful is reason enough.
